Synecdocke's Velvet Elvis (Ted)

Symptoms: vomiting, losing weight, not eating well, increased pacing, foot licking

Type of cancer: Stomach Cancer

Date diagnozed cancer: 08-02-2022

Diagnoze method: endoscopic biopsy / surgical biopsy / ultrasound. Biopsy was inconclusive, but ultrasound results confirmed by multiple doctors at Tufts University Vet School and an internal medicine specialist at a referral clinic. None of the professionals consulted had any doubt that it was stomach cancer.

Medication used: Medications prescribed/used after diagnosis: Cerenia, Entyce, Meloxicam, Omeprazole, Ondansetron, Mirtazapine, Metoclopramide

Notes: He had started vomiting in September 2021 and had an ultrasound on 12 October that did not show any abnormalities. At the time, it was suggested that probiotics be tried as well as continuation of famotidine which had reduced frequency of vomiting and reduced pacing behavior. Several littermates have "sensitive stomachs". This helped for a while, but frequency of vomiting increased slowly but steadily. Tried hydrolyzed diet but it did not help. Vomiting became very frequent at end of January and he exhibited some strange episodes that primary care vets weren't sure were neurological or pain related or something else. Scheduled a neuro consult with Tufts but appointment turned into an internal medicine and oncology consult following ultrasound clearly showing perfused gastric cancer. He also had a small nodule suggesting metastasis in one of his lungs. Needle biopsy of stomach was inconclusive, but multiple radiologists and oncologists at Tufts were certain of diagnosis due to changes in stomach as seen on u/s, as was internal medicine specialist at follow-up appointment at specialty referral clinic. Ted's decline over his last two weeks was dramatic. Medications did appear to keep him very comfortable, and he was drinking well, but he ultimately refused food entirely despite appetite stimulants. Opted for euthanasia when his attitude changed and quality of life was deteriorating.
